Life Cycle Assessment of an Integrated PV-ACAES System

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the overall life cycle environmental impact an adiabatic compressed air energy storage (ACAES) system, which designed achieve best match between power production a photovoltaic (PV) plant and demand from final user. electrical small town, with maximum load about 10 MW, considered case study. ACAES system compressor-rated MW charging discharging times 24 h, respectively. Different sizes PV plant, ranging 20 40 MWp, two different solutions for storage, underground cavern, gas pipeline, are analyzed. analysis compare impacts on human health, ecosystem quality, climate change, resource consumption generation integrated PV-ACAES those reference scenario in end user met entirely by grid. results terms reduction comparison obtained (20 MW) without section, reductions 85–95% depending category impact. integration improves self-consumption but worsens impact, especially pipelines. configuration based 30 section using cavern allows improvements 38% 61%, compared 80–91% category.
